De Quervains

This page is dedicated to supporting patients with De Quervains tendonitis by providing practical tools and strategies to help manage and, in many cases, resolve the condition. If your symptoms do not improve within 6 weeks with these measures, or if the symptoms are particularly severe, it may be appropriate to consider a steroid injection sooner.

De Quervains Exercises

De Quervain’s tendonitis is a common condition that causes pain around the thumb, wrist, and forearm. Symptoms are often related to overuse, although age can also be a contributing factor.

Specific strengthening and stretching exercises can help reduce inflammation and ease pain, with most people noticing improvement in around 6 weeks. We recommend spending 10–15 minutes each day on these exercises for the best results.

De Quervains Splint

Research and clinical guidance recommend the use of a wrist splint for around 6 weeks as part of dequervains tendonitis treatment. We advise wearing the splint consistently during this period, as evidence suggests this approach can help reduce inflamation and allow symptoms to settle.

Over the Counter Gels

We recommend daily self-massage around the outside region of the painful thumb, wrist and / or forearm using a mixture of gels such as Voltarol (anti-inflammatory gel), Deep Heat, or cooling/ice gels. Spend around 5–10 minutes each day massaging the area.

This can help to reduce inflammation, relieve tension, and over time may contribute to an overall improvement in your symptoms.
