What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment approach commonly used to help manage pain. There are two primary schools of thought behind acupuncture:

1. Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

This method is based on the belief that the body's energy—known as Qi—flows through channels called meridians. When these meridians become blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to illness or pain. By inserting fine needles into specific points, practitioners aim to restore balance and improve energy flow, promoting overall well-being.

2. Western Acupuncture / Trigger Point Dry Needling

This approach is more anatomically focused. It targets specific areas of pain, often muscular, using dry needling to stimulate a local immune and healing response. It’s based on modern understanding of physiology and trigger points rather than energy meridians.

With over 20 years of experience in using acupuncture for pain management, I’ve found that a combined approach—using elements from both traditional and western techniques—often produces the best results for my patients.

What To Expect

Each acupuncture session typically lasts up to 30 minutes. During treatment, it’s common to feel:

A tingling or warming sensation

A trickling or

flowing feeling around the needle site

These are considered positive responses, indicating activation of the body’s natural healing systems.

In recent years, there has been a growing body of evidence supporting acupuncture as a valuable treatment for managing chronic pain.

Scenario: Management | Management | Chronic pain | CKS | NICE

Current NICE guidance recommends up to 10 sessions of acupuncture for managing chronic pain. If there’s no improvement after 10 treatments, it’s unlikely that further sessions will provide benefit. For those who do respond well, the effects of treatment may gradually fade over time, at which point a repeat course may be considered.
