Back Pain

This page is dedicated to supporting patients with Back Pain by providing practical tools and strategies to help manage and, in many cases, resolve the condition. If your symptoms do not improve within 10 days to 4 weeks with these measures, or if the symptoms are particularly severe, it may be appropriate to seek medical advise to discuss alternative treatment options. Here at Elite Joint Solutions we offer expert advise and treatment in the management of back pain and sciatica.

Medication

Acute back pain, particularly nerve-related pain, can be very debilitating in the early stages. This is largely due to the inflammatory response, which can over-sensitize the nervous tissue and surrounding structures. In most cases, simple medications like paracetamol and ibuprofen are sufficient to manage the pain while your body recovers.

If these medications are not effective, you can visit a pharmacy and request a short course of co-codamol. This contains a mild opioid combined with paracetamol and may help control pain more effectively during the acute phase.

However, if your pain persists despite these measures, you should consult a medical professional to discuss other prescription options for pain relief.

Exercises

Back exercises are a fundamental intervention, not only for recovering from a back injury but also for helping prevent future episodes. By maintaining a long-term exercise routine, you keep your core muscles strong and maintain good levels of flexibility.

Although the results of these exercises are not immediate, improvements in core strength and flexibility are typically noticeable after about three months. For this reason, it is not uncommon for episodes of back pain to take up to three months to fully resolve.

Time and peristance.

The vast majority of back pain settles within 10 days to 3 months. The key is to remain patient and persistent with your treatment plan.

By taking medications as recommended during the early stages of injury, gradually progressing your rehabilitation exercises, consistently applying heat packs to the lower back, and avoiding heavy lifting or excessive bending, most people can expect their symptoms to improve within three months.

However, if your symptoms are not manageable with these simple measures, we recommend booking an appointment to see whether our expert treatment options may support your recovery.
