Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints and can affect people of all ages. Acute episodes of neck pain are often caused by muscles going into spasm or inflammation developing within the facet joints and surrounding soft tissues of the neck. While some cases occur following trauma—such as whiplash injuries—the majority develop without any obvious injury.

What Causes Acute Neck Pain?

In many cases, neck pain develops due to excessive strain being placed on the structures of the neck over time. This can cause irritation to the discs, facet joints, neural tissue and surrouding muscles. Common contributing factors include:

  • Poor posture at work or while using electronic devices

  • Sleeping in awkward positions

  • Incorrect pillow support or poor sleeping alignment

  • Prolonged desk-based work

  • Stress and muscle tension

These factors can place increased stress on the muscles, joints, and ligaments of the neck, leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced movement.

Does Neck Pain Usually Improve?

The good news is that most acute neck pain episodes settle naturally with time. Research suggests that symptoms often significantly improve or fully resolve within around 7–10 days. However data suggests it can take upto 6-12 weeks to fully resolve in some cases.

During the early stages, simple self-management strategies can be highly effective at reducing discomfort and restoring movement. You can find these on my you tube channel: managing nek pain Facebook Video

Gentle Stretching Physiotherapy Exercises

Physiotherapy neck pain exercises gently mobilise the joints and can help restore movement and reduce stiffness. I generally recommend spending around 10–15 minutes per day performing stretches, working into a mild degree of discomfort to maximise effectiveness without aggravating symptoms.Self-Management Strategies for Neck Pain

Pain Relief Medication

Over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation in the short term. Always follow guidance from your pharmacist or GP before taking medication.

Heat Therapy

Applying a heat pack to the neck muscles can help relax muscle spasm and improve blood flow to the area

Self-massage

For patients who experience recurrent or chronic neck pain, I often recommend purchasing a massage gun. Regular use can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, and alleviate stiffness in the neck and upper shoulder muscles. I typically recommend spending 5–10 minutes per day using the massage gun over the affected muscle groups, as part of an ongoing self-management strategy to help control symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

When Should You Seek Professional Treatment?

If symptoms are severe, worsening, or not manageable with simple measures, professional treatment may be beneficial.

At Elite Joint Solutions, we use a combined treatment approach designed to maximise recovery and reduce ongoing stiffness and discomfort.

Our Approach to Neck Pain Treatment

Soft Tissue / Massage Therapy

Evidence-based soft tissue release techniques can help reduce muscle tightness, improve flexibility, and decrease pain levels.

Joint manipulation techniques are used to restore mobility to stiff spinal joints and improve overall neck movement.

During treatment, patients may hear a clicking or popping sound. This is completely normal and is generally considered safe when performed appropriately by a trained professional.

Many patients notice immediate improvements following treatment, although symptoms may require 2–4 sessions to fully settle depending on severity and duration.

Additional Treatment Options

For more severe cases, additional treatment options may include:

  • Private prescriptions for acute pain management

  • Acupuncture for neck pain

I often find acupuncture, particularly dry needling, to be a very effective treatment option for muscular neck pain. During an acute episode of neck pain, the muscles surrounding the neck and upper shoulders commonly go into spasm. This muscle spasm can generate significant pain, restrict movement, and contribute to ongoing stiffness within the cervical spine.

Dry needling involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles into specific trigger points within the affected muscles. This can help produce a local twitch response and a spontaneous relaxation of the muscle tissue. As the muscle relaxes, tension is reduced, blood flow improves, and pain levels often decrease.

Many patients notice an immediate improvement in both pain and mobility following treatment. Acupuncture can be particularly useful when muscle spasm is preventing normal movement or when symptoms have not responded adequately to stretching, massage, or medication alone.

At Elite Joint Solutions, acupuncture is often used alongside soft tissue therapy, joint mobilisation, rehabilitation exercises, and postural advice to provide a comprehensive approach to managing neck pain and restoring normal function.

While individual results vary, many patients report reduced pain, improved range of movement, and a quicker return to normal daily activities following a course of treatment.

Final Thoughts

Acute neck pain can be extremely uncomfortable, but the majority of cases improve well with the right management approach. Early movement, gentle stretching, and appropriate treatment can all help speed up recovery and prevent symptoms from becoming persistent.

If you are struggling with ongoing neck pain or stiffness, professional assessment and treatment may help get you back to normal activity sooner.
