Meralgia paraesthetica is a condition caused by irritation or compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve — a sensory nerve that supplies feeling to the outer part of the thigh. This commonly leads to nerve-related pain and altered sensation in the upper thigh region.

Common Symptoms of Meralgia Paraesthetica

Patients commonly describe:

  • Burning pain in the outer or upper thigh

  • Tingling or “pins and needles” sensations

  • Numbness over the outside of the thigh

  • Increased sensitivity to touch

  • Symptoms that can travel down the leg, often as far as the knee

The symptoms are usually felt on one side only and may worsen after prolonged standing, walking, or sitting.

What Causes Meralgia Paraesthetica?

There are several factors that can contribute to compression of the nerve, including:

  • Weight gain or obesity

  • Pregnancy

  • Tight clothing or belts

  • Prolonged sitting

  • Heavy tool belts or work equipment

  • Scar tissue or previous surgery around the hip/pelvis

  • Repetitive hip flexion activities

Treatment for Meralgia Paraesthetica

In many cases, symptoms can improve with simple conservative measures, including:

  • Avoiding tight clothing

  • Loosening belts whilst sitting

  • Weight loss where appropriate

  • Gentle stretching exercises

  • Self-massage techniques

  • Improving hip and pelvic mobility

  • Activity modification

If symptoms persist, further treatments such as physiotherapy, guided injections, or specialist assessment may be beneficial.

When Should You Seek Medical Advice?

You should consider seeking professional advice if:

  • Symptoms are worsening

  • Pain becomes severe

  • Weakness develops in the leg

  • Symptoms persist despite self-management

  • The pain is affecting sleep, work, or daily activities

Early assessment can help rule out other causes of nerve pain and ensure appropriate treatment is started.

Additional Treatment Options

If these measures are not helping, we also offer ultrasound-guided nerve block injections to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. These injections can help reduce irritation around the nerve and may provide significant relief from burning pain, numbness, and tingling
